Starting in the 1970s, NYC added a 4% tax on top of retail rents. For example, if a store pays $100k/year in rent, it pays NYC $4k in tax. Retailers hate this tax today because Amazon takes a lot of their business.
What does NYC do today? NYC gives Amazon $38m in tax credits. Credits are literal dollars. They are 3x more powerful than a write off. NYC should stop offering corporate welfare to Amazon and end the 1970s tax on retail businesses. NYC is literally stealing money from David to give to Goliath.
