I'm from Update New York and I want to help my hometown grow and succeed. Today's WSJ front page has an article about Elmira, NY struggling in the retail world. A few factors have led to this, including overbuilding of stores, a drop in shale oil production, and the rise of online shopping. The town's ability to provide services is now suffering because it relied on retail sale tax.

Housewares is a $42b industry, with speciality stores making up about $4b of this. Online entities like Amazon and Wayfair now make up a slightly larger share than all those speciality stores combined. How did a few wall st backed publicly traded companies outgun 1,000s of indie stores? Us indies have to keep innovating to roll back the tide.

How often is Le Creuset mentioned on the Time's home page? Probably not too often - and yet this mention isn't likely the one the storied kitchenware brand wanted: it's about misleading customers. The biggest abusers of customers: online entities like Wayfair, Overstock, and Amazon.
In contrast, indy mom and pop stores don't have the lax morals, chutzpah, nor technical ability to pull the cons these big online players do.
This story is actually good reason to shop with your local store.
