PLATINUM VS. WHITE GOLD
I am asked all the time about the difference between platinum and white gold. Here are some facts that may help you decide which is the right metal for you.
Platinum is a naturally white metal and will always remain white. It is tough, durable and hypoallergenic. Over time platinum develops a soft dull finish, but may also develop dents or heavy scratches. Although platinum is very tough, it is also relatively soft. That said, you can have platinum polished and the metal will never polish away.
Gold on the other hand is a naturally yellow metal, which becomes white when alloyed with other white metals. That is why gold sometimes can cause allergic reactions. Gold is harder than platinum but not as tough. That means that settings may not be quite as strong, but scratching and denting are not as severe. Gold also maintains a higher shine than platinum, but when polished small amounts of metal can be lost in the process. Sometimes yellow can show through with wear. White gold is routinely rhodium plated to cover yellowing.
The last difference is in price. Because platinum is 30 times more rare than gold, and more dense, the price is generally more than it's gold counterpart.
This can be a tough choice....but hopefully the facts will help!
