How registrants can add a link at the top of their The Knot website leading to their registry at your store.
April 26, 2024
Your Shop Local Store has a new feature: Your registrants can now share their registry at your store on The Knot more easily.
By default, The Knot lists manually added registries at the bottom of the page. The Knot lists registries from big-box names, like Target and Crate & Barrel, at the top of the page. Unfortunately, this makes it harder for gift givers to find your store in a registrant's list of registries.
There isn’t a way to change the page order to have the ...

How Shop Local helps South Carolina retailers get sales leads
March 13, 2024
Indie stores have the best chance of ranking highly in Google when they use Shop Local. Merchants know this because of their page 1 rankings and how they beat big-box stores in search tests, such as for South Carolina results.
These Shop Local retailers located in South Carolina appear on page one of Google due to their Shop Local Store:
As the new year is underway, there’s reason to be bullish (or, at least, not bearish) about what 2024 may have in store. Holiday retail sales increased 3.1% despite lingering inflation, thanks to robust job growth and strong wage gains, which came as a big relief for retailers. Price-conscious consumers are still spending, suggesting the economy is strong. “What we’re seeing this holiday season is very consistent with how we’re thinking about the economy, which is that it...

Part of my job is to review registry software. I ensure it works well for retailers, registrants, and gift-givers (family and friends). I also assess whether it offers good value (price vs. results).
When looking for registry software, some retailers consider MyRegistry.com for their registry service. I reviewed a retailer's site using MyRegistry.com and assessed how a customer would make a registry purchase. For privacy purposes, I blurred the store's name in the screenshots shown.

How to view popular gifts to add them to a registry.
October 4, 2023
Your Shop Local Store has a new feature: We've made it easier for gift registrants to view and add gifts to their wedding registry. There is now a new "Add Gifts" page that showcases popular gifts that a registrant may wish to add to their registry.
The Add Gifts page is tailored to the registry type. For example, the Add Gifts page for a wedding registry displays the following content:
How to switch your account to visitor mode to hide admin features and wholesale prices.
September 7, 2023
Your Shop Local Store has a new feature: We've made it easier to switch your page view to Visitor Mode. The new purple bar at the bottom of the page allows you to toggle between Office Mode and Visitor Mode.
Office Mode is designed for administering your account. You can perform functions unique to owning your account, such as adding, editing, and deleting content.
Visitor Mode shows your account as a visitor (customer) may see it. Turning on Visitor Mode hides admin features and...

Often described as flying jewels due to their remarkable colors, some male hummingbirds have learned to orient their bodies and feathers towards the sun to enhance the visual impact of their iridescent plumage and to heighten their appeal during courtship. It appears that Herend's hummingbird has learned this lesson well and has briefly stopped his dazzling wings so that their beauty can be appreciated from all angles. However, this avian acrobat won't sit still for long and in a blink of an eye...

I have a stack of virtual news clippings that either struck my fancy, taught me something new, or just made me shake my head in bemusement. On their own, they may not be enough for me to make a point, but together they have a thought-provoking synergy (and I'm sure I'll figure out what that is by the end of this column).
Our industry has been negatively affected by the loss of American manufacturing after we entered a long stretch of automation and outsourcing in the late 1970s; every ...

What we can learn about a company through its mission statement.
June 30, 2023
This past week, I read a mission statement from The Knot's corporate website (https://www.theknotww.com/). The statement included a paragraph and five principles. The paragraph describes what the parent company does. The statement says:
"We help couples around the world navigate and enjoy life’s biggest moments together. As a global company, our industry-leading websites, top-ranked mobile apps, and trusted resources provide the most sought-after information, connections, and ...

Our retailers recently told us that customers are calling and asking about non-existent brides, and brides are asking about non-existent registry gift lists (e.g. wedding registry lists, baby lists).
We investigated the issues and below is what we found.
What is Happening:
We found that many of these purchases are coming from registrants that open a ‘universal registry’ on websites such as Zola or MyRegistry. These universal registry services allow the registrant to add ...

Your Bridge Store has a new feature to encourage customers to complete a registry purchase. Your Bridge Store now displays gift givers' names on a registry's list. This strategy is designed on two principles:
Consumers are more likely to make a purchase if they see that others have made a purchase.
Consumers are more likely to make a purchase if they know the name of an existing gift giver.
Your Bridge Store now makes customers more likely to complete a purchase. Your Bridge Store displays a banner when checking out sharing how many customers have placed orders with your store. This social proof strategy gives the shopper an assurance that your store has the experience to handle their purchase successfully.
The example shows the checkout page for a registry gift purchase at The Ivy House, a fine tableware store in Dallas. We see a banner that displays the ...

In her new book ‘Quit,' Annie Duke shares that the best poker players only play 25% of the hands they are dealt, whereas others play 50%. Ms. Duke talks with Stewart Butterfield, the founder of a few startups, most recently Slack (which is an acronym, which I didn’t know). Slack wouldn’t have been born if Mr. Butterfield didn’t drop a video game company to start Slack. Likewise for Twitter which was born out of the failed blogging company Odeo. Ms. Duke's lesson: winners ...
