What universal standards can teach us about simplicity regarding e-commerce platforms.

When Apple launched its new iPhones this month, one of its most noteworthy updates was replacing its Lightning charging cable with a USB-C. This was not a voluntary move or extension of Steve Jobs’s love of simplicity. Apple changed it because the European Union required them to, according to Ben Cohen in The Wall St. Journal. Now, just about every mobile phone in the world (forget just little ol’ Europe) will have one charging solution (USB-C).

Jim Collins, in his book BE 2.0, explains how purpose and mission are important to companies. To help explain this, he uses the metaphor of crossing a mountain range and seeing a star on the horizon. Your purpose is to reach the spot on the horizon below the star. The current mission is climbing up the mountain you’re on. The next mission is climbing up the next mountain and so forth in order to get closer to the spot on the horizon. You will have many missions, and may never ...

Last February e-commerce company Shopify Inc. replaced the “Ottawa, Canada” dateline that began its press releases and earnings reports with a strange new one: “Internet, Everywhere.” The geographical shift came at the insistence of Shopify’s founder and chief executive officer, Tobi Lütke, who tends to view such matters through the prism of cold, hard logic. In May 2020, only a few months into the pandemic, he’d made the early, seemingly rash decision to...

Maker Scarlett Markham is actually a former Parkleigh employee! She developed her line, Flour Pail Kids while working here. We thought our customers would be as amused by it as we are by Scarlett. Her quirky sense of humor mixes nostalgic icons with the edge of today to inspire her work. What could be more full of Rochester spirit than a tiny Genny Beer pin? Her Rochester icon t-shirts are also a stand out among others around town. When Scarlett isnβt designing or doing one of her jack-of-all-...

I got a kick out of this AM's WSJ about companies fibbing their age to appear more hip. I've often tried to pen when Bridge as we know it came about. In 2007, I created Bridge's Smart Product syncing service. (We started with a whopping 8 brands and 2 retailers using this service! Today we have 120 brands and 260 retailers sharing products via syncing.) In 2011, we created the template store and gift registry that today 95% of clients use to sell products and host gift registries. I think that...

What would dinner with Salvador Dali be like? Hint: he liked to throw food...
We're volunteering with the public library to help collect local stories. Why? Bridge believes in supporting independent businesses and local people that support them. Here's our friend Gordon Hawkins sharing his experience as an artist in Soho who ate with Dali at the St. Moritz in 1969.
Note: the interview is about two hours. The Dali dinner is about half way thru.

Giving tableware and home good products green ratings and labels
The Ad Age article below describes how the European Commission may propose a system to put color-coded labels on cars designating how 'green' they are. What if this was done for home goods brands? For individual products?
